Key tags, complete with registration number, allow lost keys to be mailed to the owner’s address.

“The key tag campaign has been going on since the end of the Second World War,” Shannon Krasowski, the War Amps’ Alberta Regional Liaison, told the Trending 55 Newsroom. “It’s allowed veterans who returned as amputees the opportunity to be able to get back to work by being employed through the key tag service.

“And now, they’ve passed on their legacy to child amputees,” she continued. “Many have lost a limb due to illness like cancer, such as myself for example. As well, many more were possibly born missing a limb or more. There were also children who were involved in accidents, like with lawnmowers, farm equipment, or even motor vehicle accidents.”

Along with the key tags, members of the public get requests for donations to the War Amps. Krasowski says while they are not required, they are very much appreciated.

“If somebody finds a set of lost keys, and they have the War Amps key tag on it, the finder can contact the 1-800 number on the tag, and we can then mail it by courier free of charge,” she said. “And nowadays, with the high costs of key fobs and remotes, it’s always nice to see a person get their keys back quickly and without expense. Prices to replace a key fob or remote could run anywhere from $200 to $600.

“The way we receive donations is from individuals who may find value in the program,” Krasowski continued. “Otherwise, there is no fee to have the key tag itself.”

Anyone who wants more information, or didn’t get their tags, they can call the War Amps at 1-800-250-3030, or they go online at http://www.waramps.ca.

Next year’s key tag program will take place in conjunction with the 100th Anniversary of the War Amps organization, which was founded just after the First World War ended in 1918.
