Emergency Preparedness week this week

The Alberta RCMP is recognizing Emergency Preparedness Week, running May 3rd to 9th, with a message for residents across the province: be ready before disaster strikes.

This year’s theme, “Be Prepared. Know Your Risks,” encourages Albertans to understand the hazards specific to their region—whether that’s wildfires, floods, severe storms, or power outages—and take action to stay safe.

Officials say preparation doesn’t have to be complicated. Start by identifying local risks, create a clear emergency plan for your household, and assemble a kit with enough food, water, medications, and essentials to last at least 72 hours.

The Alberta RCMP says it’s also ready. Its Operational Readiness and Response Unit has plans in place year-round, including emergency operations centres, search and rescue teams, and wildfire response coordination already underway for the season.

The goal: ensure critical services continue and communities stay protected when emergencies happen.

For Albertans, the message is simple—know the risks, make a plan, and be prepared.
