Session Coming Up in Beaverlodge This Month on How to Grade Your Crops

Here’s a chance for Peace Country farmers to find out how to grade their grain.

This one-day annual course, called Making the Grade 2017, is designed to provide a better understanding with how your crops are graded, and what you need to know to get the best one.

The crops that are covered in this particular course include canola, wheat, barley and pulse crops.

There will be two one-day courses offered in the province this year.

The first one will go from 8:30 AM until 4:00 PM at the Beaverlodge Research Station on Tuesday, July 25, 2017.

And, for those unable to make it to Beaverlodge that day, they can drive further on south to attend the course in Olds on Thursday, July 27, 2017.

The list of guest speakers so far is as follows:

  • Judy Elias (Canadian Grain Commission) – She’ll discuss the canola grading process, including correct screening for dockage and assessing green seed.
  • Gregory Sekulic (Canola Council of Canada) – He’ll look at the agronomic practices growers can do to help get the best grade and ensure canola’s ready for export.
  • Dean Dias (Canadian International Grains Institute) and Bill Aduno (Canadian Grain Commission) – Both will discuss the Wheat Grading Process.
  • Larry Michta (SGS) and Kevin Sich (Rahr Malting) – They’ll talk about the Malt Barley grading process.
  • Bill Chapman (Alberta Agriculture & Forestry) – He’ll discuss the agronomic best practices for growing barley.

The event is being put on by the Alberta Canola Producers Commission, Alberta Barley, the Alberta Wheat Commission, as well as Alberta’s Pulse Growers.
