With kids starting to go back to school, motorists will have to contend with school buses on the road.
Harry Davis, the High Prairie School Division’s Director of Transportation, says all motorists need to be aware of the buses and what they’re doing.
“When those buses are activating their amber lights and their reds, respect those lights. Amber lights show that the bus and the driver is ready to stop to either pick up or drop off students.”
Drivers caught passing schools buses when they’re doing a drop-off or pick-up can possibly get a fine of up to $543 and six demerit points.
Davis says that all of their school buses have cameras on them to catch drivers not stopping when the bus is making a stop.
“We download the video evidence and submit that to our enforcement. They take that to the courts and process accordingly. We’ve unfortunately found success and I say unfortunately because one is too many.”
Motorists will also have to contend with the 30 km/h school zones, which in High Prairie and Big Lakes are in effect from 8 AM to 4:30 PM.
