At the Peace River Museums Canada Day flag raising ceremony Peace River Mayor, Tom Tarpey spoke on the heaviness the nation is feeling on a day which is usually full of festivities.
Mayor Tarpey’s speech reflected recent discoveries of hundreds of unmarked graves of children, the first people of Canada being Indigenous and recognizing Peace River is on Treaty 8 land.
Tarpey wore an orange shirt to show his support of FNMI people during this mournful time with more unmarked graves of children across the country at former residential schools being found every week.
