Peace River-Westlock MP Arnold Viersen says Prime Minister Justin Trudeau making his own appointment for a vacant Senate seat from Alberta is another case of “the Liberals ignoring the will of Albertans.”

Viersen says it sends it message about the treatment of the province by the federal government.

“This is just a blatant example of that. When it comes to trying to build pipelines or get our interests happening, the Liberals tend to ignore Alberta. Here we are the Senate elections are right around the corner, we’re ready to fill those spots and here Justin Trudeau is filling spots with his appointees.”

Alberta has done previous Senate nominee elections in 1989, 1998, 2004 and 2012 with another one set for October 18.

Viersen calls it quote “a clear and flagrant disregard of the will of Albertans.”

“It’s extremely frustrating as we have this fall an election to select senators happening during the municipal elections as well and so that vacancy should’ve been left open so that it could be filled after that election, but Justin Trudeau ignored the will of Albertans once again and just appointed somebody to that position.”

In a letter he sent to the Prime Minister, Viersen added that “this disappointment is compounded by the fact that Alberta is under-represented by population in the Senate already.”
