The province is supporting a number of projects focused on clean technology in the energy sector.

Jobs, Economy and Innovation Minister Doug Schweitzer was on the Trending 55 Hot Seat and says they’ve invested in a number of cutting edge projects.

“Everything from bitumen beyond combustion, so looking for what other uses does the oil sands have. There’s so many other minerals that are in there like carbon fibre and everything else that’s needed long term as we’re starting to see more and more prevalence of electric vehicles and things like that. There’s so many amazing resources here in Alberta and we’re the world leaders of extracting resources responsibly.”

The province is investing $13 million to support 22 projects through Alberta Innovates.

Schweitzer says they want Alberta to continue to be “at the forefront of all things energy.”

“We have a reputation of being one of the most innovative spaces when it came to unlocking the oil sands. Horizontal drilling, carbon capture, that technology was built here in Alberta. Some of this actually involves artificial intelligence so this technology and innovation space and the data space plays into the energy industry to unlock new opportunities.”
