A small town Alberta lady has made it big with her fashion making a debut on one of Hollywood’s hottest awards season red carpets.
Previously a Fairview resident, Delayne Dixon was sitting on the couch in her new home of Kamloops, BC on Sunday night watching the Oscars red carpet along with over 15 million other viewers across North America, when she got a phone notification for a tagged story post on Instagram.
The tagged post turned out to be from a Hollywood stylist with his client, Rasha Goel wearing Dixon’s couture dress interviewing celebrities before they headed inside for the awards ceremony.
“It was so surreal when I found out.” – Delayne Dixon
Dixon graduated from Fairview High School in 2009 and earned her degree in Fashion Design from the Art Institute of Vancouver in 2012. Dixon’s brand; Delayne Dixon focuses on sustainable, handmade-to-order pieces with a more edgy/punk aesthetic. Dixon runs her brand by herself. Dixon says it’s every designers dream to get to the Hollywood level. “I think when I saw the picture of her (Goel) wearing the dress and Kevin Costner was right behind her, I was like WOW this is so nuts!” Dixon notes she’s very grateful for the recognition. Her designs have also been featured at New York and Paris Fashion Weeks as well as in British Vogue a number of times.
The dress getting into the hands of the Hollywood stylist was thanks to it being in an Los Angeles showroom says Dixon. “I’m just going to keep making pieces and hopefully more celebrity stylists take my bait.” Dixon added the TV host that wore her dress to the Oscars ‘loved it’ and wants to continue working with her.
Being from a small community in northern Alberta, Dixon says the consistency and work she put in over the years is why she is, where she is today. “Honestly if I can do it… I promise anybody else can. If you chose something you are passionate about and you dedicate to your craft for years, you will succeed.” Dixon says she was working part-time jobs and putting her career on the side, but never stopped chasing her dreams.
