She’s in her first term as an MLA, but she’s also running for the leadership of the NDP.
Jodi Calahoo Stonehouse says one major topic she’s heard from people are environmental concerns after the fires that happened in Northern Alberta last spring.
“The bomber planes could not dive into the lakes or ponds because they were still frozen and they were waiting for the province to show up to help. Listening to the stories of the volunteers and the hard workers, there’s no plan. There’s no place for their cattle to be moved in case of forest fires, and the predictions are that we’re going to have more forest fires based on the lightning because of the weather patterns.”
The MLA for Edmonton-Rutherford says her Albertans Right to Water Act is all about protecting that resource.
“Every single industry, whether it’s hydrogen, oil and gas, irrigation for farming, every single one of our economic systems depends on water. Our current allocation system is outdated. Many of the corporate entities that are entitled to water don’t even exist anymore.”
Calahoo Stonehouse says she also wants to see more investments into education and health care in rural areas.
