- Peace River Council is in discussions regarding the Non-Standard Crosswalk policy. The Policy states how the town would handle requests to paint decorative crosswalks in town.
Council is considering puting a policy in place, since none exists. - A federal election seems likely to happen soon with the NDP ending their confidence and supply agreement that helped keep the Liberals in power.
Arnold Viersen, the MP for Peace River-Westlock, says cost of living is expected to be a major issue in the next election, whenever that happens. (Interview on App) - There are no wildfires burning out of control in the forest protection area of Alberta. There are currently 74 wildfires burning across the area.
All fire bans, advisories, and restrictions have also been lifted. Residents should still check for bans or advisories in their area by visiting the province’s website. - Jurisdictions around the area are planning Fall Clean-up schedules. The Town of Peace River has Front Yard Put and Take on Sept. 14-16, and Curbside Clean-up from Sept. 17-20.
Meanwhile, Northern Sunrise County happens from September 23 to October 5. - The Alberta government says it’s moving ahead this fall with legislation that would require parents to sign up to have their children opt-in for sex education.
Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides says school boards, teachers, superintendents and parents are being consulted, however it’s not clear what the legislation might look like. - NWJHL Pre-season tonight… Peace River is in Fort St. John, and Beaverlodge and Dawson Creek play in Chetwynd BC.
- Local football gets underway this weekend with a Bantam game tomorrow. Peace River play in Grande Prairie against the Raiders.
- Sucker Creek First Nation has their Indian Relay Races this weekend at the High Prairie Elks Rodeo Grounds. Events start at 2pm this afternoon.
- The Peace River Mud Bog and Fair runs tomorrow and Sunday at the Fairgrounds on the East Hill.
- The Miserable Miles Obstacle Race happens tomorrow at the Ski Hill. Proceeds from the event go the Peace Regional SPCA.
- Sunshine and warm temperature are continuing into this weekend in the Northwest. Highs this afternoon are in the mid to high 20’s, with lows tonight in the high single-digits.
Numbers will cool down by the beginning of next week, with the possibility of some showers in the Peace and MacKenzie on Monday.
