Authorities asking people to be mindful of pedestrians

As daylight hours shorten, commuters are increasingly traveling during periods of limited visibility. The Alberta RCMP emphasizes the importance of heightened caution for both drivers and pedestrians to ensure safety on the roads.

For Drivers:

– School and Playground Zones: Exercise extra vigilance in these areas, especially during early mornings and late afternoons. Adhering to posted speed limits ensures you can stop promptly if necessary.

– Crosswalks: Never pass vehicles stopped at crosswalks; unseen pedestrians may be crossing. Always make eye contact with pedestrians before turning at intersections and ensure crosswalks are clear before proceeding.

– Intersection Awareness: Recognize that crosswalks exist at all intersections, marked or unmarked. Drivers are required to yield to pedestrians in these areas.

For Pedestrians:

– Obey Traffic Signals: Follow all posted signs and signals. Cross streets at marked crosswalks or well-lit areas when crosswalks are unavailable.

– Visibility: Ensure you’re visible to motorists; wear high-visibility clothing during low-light conditions. Before entering a crosswalk, confirm that all vehicles have stopped.

– Walking Safety: If sidewalks are unavailable, walk facing traffic and maintain as much distance from vehicles as possible.

Sgt. Darrin Turnbull of Alberta RCMP Traffic advises, “Daylight hours change quickly this time of year, and many of us are travelling during dimly lit hours. It’s important for both drivers and pedestrians to practice extra caution when using roadways to ensure everyone’s safety.”

By adhering to these guidelines, all road users can contribute to a safer commuting environment during the darker months.
