Town of Grimshaw council addressed a range of community safety, infrastructure traffic, and regional project collaboration during its most recent regular meeting held last Wednesday, January 14.
Council heard a presentation from Allen Gukert of APEX Security, who outlined options for implementing night patrol services within the town. The presentation focused on enhancing after-hours monitoring and community safety.
Energy Alberta also appeared before council to present a Draft Concept Overview for a proposed Community Working Group that would collaborate on socio-economic studies related to the proposed Peace River Nuclear Power Project. The presentation provided an overview of the project, anticipated stakeholder engagement, and the scope of the socio-economic assessment. Under the proposed model, Energy Alberta would partner with local municipalities, with one staff member from each municipality helping to lead the studies and contribute to future planning and decision-making.
Council further reviewed the results of a traffic study for the Mile Zero Regional Multiplex and Joint School Facility conducted by MMSA. The report highlighted existing walking and driving routes, identified conflict areas and potential collision risks, and provided short-term recommendations, proposed parking lot changes, and medium- to long-term traffic improvements.
Several sponsorships and community contributions were approved, including $1,000 in support of the Women in the North Conference, scheduled to take place in Grimshaw on April 22, 2026.  Council also approved a $3,000 sponsorship for the 2026 Pond Hockey Association event, set for March 6, 7 and 8, and a $250 donation in gift cards to support Curling Club bonspiels during the 2025-2026 season.
In administrative matters, council appointed Chief Administrative Officer Olive Toews as the town’s Director of Emergency Management. Council also approved an extension of the Mile Zero Regional Multiplex concession agreement, moving the expiry date from April 30, 2026, to July 1, 2026, to align with the full school year.
Looking ahead, council will participate in an upcoming online meeting with MLA Dyck and representatives from Minister Ellis’ office to discuss policing matters affecting the community.
