Peace River Town Council has directed Administration to use unallocated Local Government Fiscal Framework (LGFF) funds in the 2026 capital budget to cover a $125,000 shortfall for the Glenmary School sidewalk project. The decision allows the project to proceed in 2026, maintaining momentum on what has been identified as a key student safety improvement.
The total estimated cost of the sidewalk section is approximately $250,000. Council had planned to fund half the project through LGFF dollars, with the remaining $125,000 expected from a grant through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM). However, the Town was recently notified that its grant application was unsuccessful, creating the funding gap.
To prevent cancellation or delay, Council approved redirecting $134,000 in 2026 LGFF funding that had been slated to carry forward into 2027. By reallocating those funds, the Town can move ahead with construction this year rather than postponing the project.
The missing sidewalk section between 98 Street and 89 Avenue would connect Glenmary School and T.A. Norris to the existing sidewalk network along 98 Street. Currently, the gap forces pedestrians — including many students — onto the roadway. The project has been identified as a top priority in the Town of Peace River’s Active Transportation Plan.
