The new Advancing Ag Future Leaders Program initiative has been launched.
It’s aimed at encouraging young agriculture professionals to further their careers within the industry.
The program was announced on Monday, June 5, 2017 by the Alberta Wheat Commission (AWC) and Alberta Barley.
It pairs selected apprentices with an Ag industry mentor who’ll share their knowledge and expertise based on similar interests and career goals over a one-year period.
“The Advancing Ag selection committee is elated to host its first event (in Red Deer on Thursday, June 8),” AWC Vice-Chairperson Kevin Bender said in a news release. “It helps facilitate the apprentice/mentor relationships, and get this pilot year off to a productive start.”
This inaugural event is a meet-and-greet and is the matches’ first opportunity to build their professional relationship and mentoring plan for this year. Kristina Polziehn, an independent agronomist, will speak on challenging the status quo to achieve success. As well, Charlie Bredo of Troubled Monk Brewery will explain how to harness entrepreneurial spirit.
“Advancing Ag’s goal of pairing young agri-professionals with leaders who can share their knowledge and experience while assisting in key professional development opportunities is becoming a reality,” said Dave Bishop, Vice-Chairperson of Alberta Barley.
Eight apprentices have been chosen for this year. The program hopes to increase the number to 15 for subsequent years.
