The Alberta government is encouraging more people to buy and support local.

Agriculture Minister RJ Sigurdson says their “Buy Local” campaign is a way to help show support for the province’s agriculture and food industry.

“If you look for the made in Alberta label, that is a product that is sourced and processed right here in the province. We’re also looking at additional opportunities and partnerships with local grocers to help identify Alberta and Canadian locally sourced products.”

Sigurdson says they also want to provide more awareness to consumers on how to identify Alberta- and Canadian-made foods and products.

The tariff situation between Canada and the US has been pushing many Canadians into buying more Canadian made products.

While the agriculture sector has been affected by any tariffs yet, Sigurdson says he’s been in discussion with US officials how agriculture is beneficial on both sides of the border.

“We have been working with our US counterparts to make sure that they are aware of the negative impacts that tariffs on Canada would have to food security and food affordability all across North America. That includes US citizens as well. If we’re going to work in the best interests of our citizens, we need to be able to protect the CUSMA agreement.”
