Alberta Barley Urges Producers to Take Part in Federal Food Survey

Online consultations are taking place for the Government of Canada’s A Food Policy for Canada.

In a news release, Alberta Barley wants farmers to take part in online consultations that were launched by Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay.

They say as primary producers of Canada’s food supply, farmer input will be integral in developing this new policy, which the federal government says will address issues related to the production, processing, distribution and consumption of food.

“We are pleased to see the federal government engaging with stakeholders across the food industry,” Alberta Barley Chairperson Jason Lenz said in the news release. “This input of farmers will add perspective to this complex policy objective.”

The government says this policy, the first of its kind, will explore the agriculture industry’s relationship to food, including the producers’ commitment to conserving soil, water and air while growing high-quality food.

“Providing feedback on our use of environmentally sustainable practices, as well as the ability to adapt to changing conditions, will show the federal government our contribution to the long-term, reliable and abundant supply of safe, healthy food,” Lenz said.

Individual farmers have until July 27, 2017 to participate in this online survey.
