Alberta Agriculture & Forestry is leading a trade and investment mission to the European Union this week.
Agriculture Minister Oniel Carlier said in a news release that the EU presents tremendous opportunities for Alberta’s exports of agricultural interests.
“Expanding our international trade and investment relationships creates jobs in Alberta,” said Carlier. “It also further diversifies our economy.”
First stop is in the Netherlands on October 1, 2017, with some investment meetings with government officials, and with industry.
Much of the same is on the agenda on October 4 and 5, when the minister and his entourage travel to Belgium and France, respectively. In the latter, Alberta is set to sign an amended letter of intent to include forestry along with agriculture as an area for collaboration and research.
And then, on October 8, Carlier will take part, along with Alberta exporters, in the Anuga Trade Show in Cologne, Germany. The show bills itself as the world’s largest and most important trade fair for food and beverages.
Their mission concludes on the 9th.
The EU, Alberta’s fifth-largest export market, was a mayor destination for the province’s wheat, canola seed, prepared animal feed, beef and bison. Agriculture and food exports were valued at $404-million in 2016.
