
On December 13, 2021 the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team was directed to investigate an incident that happened on December 12, 2021 where a 22-year-old man taken taken to hospital after being arrested and placed in police custody.
At 10:52 a.m. on December 12, the Lakeshore Regional Police Service received a complaint of an unwanted, intoxicated man at a residence on the Sucker Creek First Nation.
Officers responded to the complaint and found the man in a vehicle in the driveway. The man was on conditions where he was required to be within his own residence. Police tried to arrest the man, but he fled and entered an occupied residence and barricaded himself and two other adults in a bedroom.
Officers entered the bedroom and a physical confrontation with the man and police took place, where he was arrested, taken to the LRPS detachment and placed into a cell at 12:35 p.m.
Around 2.5 hours later, a guard noticed the man needing medical attention, when EMS was called and took over care of the unconscious man. He was transported to hospital and admitted.
ASIRT’s main focus of their investigation is on the use of force by the officers and any connection between this use of force and the hospitalization of the man. No additional information will be released.
