Big Lakes County is supporting an organization that helps save lives. The county is donating $25,000 to the Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service (STARS).
The STARS Air Ambulance Service is a not-for-profit company that airlifts patients from rural areas to larger hospitals.
Big Lakes County Reeve, Richard Simard, says this is part of a five-year grant sponsorship commitment to STARS. “It makes sense because the hospital in High Prairie is the one they (STARS) use the most,” says Simard.
According to Simard, 243 Big Lakes residents have needed the service. According to the STARS website, it costs $5,400 to transport one patient.
According to Simard, helicopters currently land on the lawn by the hospital. He says the county is looking into putting a runway by the hospital.
