Canada Day 150 Celebrations Across the Peace Country

Canada Day activities took place right around the Peace Country over the weekend.

In the Town of Peace River, hundreds attended the celebrations happening at Riverfront Park.

Summer Events Coordinator Lauren Farrow says a variety of events took place at the park.

“We had a bunch of live music going on to entertain the crowd,” Farrow told the Trending 55 Newsroom. “We had a slip-and-slide, a couple of bouncy castles with some obstacle courses in them, we had face-painting and glitter tattoos, we had crafts, Parent Link had a booth her, and we were sponsored by Freson Brothers, who provided free food for all the revelers. All in all, we had a really great turnout at this event.”

Peace River Mayor Tom Tarpey also says he was pleased with the event’s turnout.

“I think we had more people here than at (U.S. President Donald Trump)’s inauguration back in January,” Tarpey joked.

Peace Regional RCMP Staff Sargent Brent Meyer also took in the event. He says he couldn’t resist the urge to go down the slip-and-slide, complete in full-dress uniform.

“Constable Tim Stevens and I were at the event on (Saturday, July 1, 2017) since before 11 o’clock,” said Sgt. Meyer. “The slip-and-slide was just two inviting for us to not give it a go, so we took off our spurs and just let the red surge just flow on down.”

The live musical entertainment for the two-day event included Midnight Lights, TJ Ruckus, Megan Taker and Luke Lounsbury. Other forms of entertainment included a circus performance and workshop by Ballyhoo Entertainment, as well as balloon artist Noel Bundy.

A farmer’s market was also set up at Athabasca Hall for the event’s first few hours.

Of course, Peace River wasn’t the only town who had something going on for the Canada 150 celebrations.

The Town of High Prairie had various activities happening at Jaycee Park, including live entertainment, hand-games, a water splash zone, a rodeo, and a drop-in family slow pitch.

The day began in the Town of High Level with a Canada Day Breakfast at the Spirit of the North School, followed by the Canada Day Parade, as well as family fun at Centennial Park.

And of course, there were lots of other activities happening in Valleyview, Northern Sunrise County, as well as in Big Lakes County too.
