COVID-19 UPDATE: April 20

On April 20, Alberta Health Services confirmed 1,345 new cases of COVID-19 over the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases in the province to 173,531.

Five people passed away, which means 2,048 Albertans have now died from COVID-19.

476 people are currently in hospital due to COVID.

In the North Zone, there are 17,576 cases of COVID-19 and 152 people have passed away.

There are currently 2,543 active cases in our zone with 143 in Mackenzie County, 104 in Big Lakes County, 40 in the MD of Peace, 27 in the MD of Fairview, 25 in the MD of Greenview, 22 in Clear Hills County, 20 in Northern Sunrise County, 15 in the MD of Smoky River, 14 in the County of Northern Lights, 13 in MD of Spirit River and, seven in Saddle Hills County, and five in Birch Hills County.

AHS is reporting that 153,002 people have recovered from the virus.

This means that there are currently 18,481 active cases across Alberta.

Outbreaks have been declared at the following facilities:

  • The Grocery People, High Level
  • Michels Canada, Valleyview
  • Peace River Correctional Centre
  • RCC Simonette Lodge, Valleyview
  • St. Theresa General Hospital, Fort Vermilion

To help slow spread or ease fear of catching COVID-19, the government recommends washing your hands for at least 20 seconds, and to avoid touching the face.

The Government of Alberta also made masks mandatory indoors.
