COVID-19 UPDATE: January 8

On January 8, Alberta Health Services confirmed 1,183 new cases of COVID-19 over the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases in the province to 109,652.

24 people passed away, which means 1,241 Albertans have now died from COVID-19.

In the North Zone, there are 8,036 cases of COVID-19 and 74 people have passed away, including one person in the latest update.

There are currently 1,508 active cases in our zone with 132 in Big Lakes County, 89 in the MD of Peace, 67 in Northern Sunrise County, 51 in the MD of Greenview, 21 in Mackenzie County, five in the MD of Smoky River and Saddle Hills County, while all other jurisdictions in our area have four or less active cases.

AHS is reporting that 94,783 people have recovered from the virus.

This means that there are currently 13,628 active cases across Alberta.

Outbreaks have been declared at the following facilities:

  • Heimstaed Lodge, LaCrete
  • High Prairie Health Complex
  • Peace River Correctional Facility
  • Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, McLennan

To help slow spread or ease fear of catching COVID-19, the government recommends washing your hands for at least 20 seconds, and to avoid touching the face.

The Government of Alberta also made masks mandatory indoors
