FHS Principal David Hamlyn said in a news release that they’re thrilled to host the tournament.

“It’s a great opportunity to showcase our school, the community, and to sheer on our senior girls’ volleyball team,” said Hamlyn. “It’s certainly a special experience for this wonderful and deserving group of student athletes to compete and host provincials in their home community.”

The event begins with opening ceremonies at the FHS gymnasium at 9:30 AM on Thursday, with blessings from Elder Dave Matilpi, as well as greetings from local MLA Marg McCuaig-Boyd.

McCuaig-Boyd, a former teacher and principal from Peace River School Division (PRSD), also once served as zone president for the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association. She says that Fairview, as well as FHS, holds a special place in her heart.

“Being on a sports team provides students with valuable life skills,” said McCuaig-Boyd. “They include time management, teamwork, leadership and adversity. I’m excited to watch some of the best teams in the province compete.

“Hosting provincials is an awesome opportunity for student athletes to showcase their skills, their school and their community,” she continued. “It gives players a strong sense of pride to play at home in front of their family and friends.”

Provincial play takes place at the gymnasiums at FHS and E.E. Oliver (EEO) schools; First game goes at 11:30 AM on Thursday.

The championship match-up is scheduled for 6:30 PM on Saturday.
