The Federal Conservatives are not prepared to sign off on the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Last week, Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, assured the leaders of Mexico and the United States that the updated NAFTA would be ratified in Parliament. According to Peace River-Westlock MP, Arnold Viersen, the party is still examining details of the trade pact. “We haven’t had a chance to look at the actual wording of the new agreement,” says Viersen. “We are just going from what Justin Trudeau has said, and the piece around aluminum continues to be a concern.”
Viersen adds that the Tories support free trade but also pointed out that the ratification of an international trade agreement is a matter of confidence. If the deal is not rubber stamped by Parliament, it would trigger another election. Since the liberals have a minority government, another party would have to support the trade deal for it to be ratified.
