Firefighters from Peace River and the County of Northern Lights spent 24 hours on the roof of Peace River’s Tim Horton’s last month.
And now, the final numbers are out.
The goal was to raise $5,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Society of Canada. But instead, they ended up raising $6,615.40.
According to a news release, fire departments across Canada raise money through Rooftop Campouts across the country for the cause.
But in Peace River, Fire Chief Tim Harris told the Trending 55 Newsroom that it was the first time they’ve ever held the event.
“We’re very happy with the money raised,” said Harris. “This event was well supported by the public, so we’ll definitely look at doing this event again next year, and hope to grow it every year.”
Harris says he thanks everyone who made a contribution, and to all the firefighters who spent the night on the roof.
“The timing was right to do the event,” he said. “It took place right before all the cold weather began to come in.”
Muscular Dystrophy is part of a group of muscle diseases called “neuromuscular disorders,” which, of course, weaken the body’s muscles.
The causes, symptoms, age of onset, severity, and progression vary depending on the exact diagnosis, as well as the individual.
