The Peace River fire department is warning people to stay off the ice on the river.
Fire Chief Tim Harris says with the temperatures warming up in the spring time, we’re about 7-10 days from the ice breaking up in town.
“The recent snowfall we’ve had on the ice can make it look like it is quite solid, but it hides the thin spots in the ice so anybody out on the ice on the river could hit one of those thin spots and fall through.”
Harris adds that the strong currents in the river would make it very difficult to rescue people who fall through.
“When you see people being rescued if they fall through a pond or a lake, the ice is quite different. It’s a little thicker and more solid and when people fall in they tend to stay in one spot and have a chance at being rescued.”
Harris says if anyone did fall through the ice, they’d be swept away instantly and would not survive.
