The province’s “return to play” initiative is looking to get more Alberta kids and youth active.

Culture Minister Ron Orr says grants are available to help low income families with sports registration fees and help sports organizations recover from the pandemic.

“To help kids get more active, $1.85 million will support 7000 Alberta youth from low income families with up to $250 each for the registration fees to join an organized sports program. $2.1 million will go to sports organizations themselves to help get them back on their feet, to help them with recovery.”

Orr says sporting organizations will be able to get funding “so that there’s something for kids to go to.”

“We’ve been hearing from many organizations, including from organizations in the Peace Region, that programs have either had to consolidate, in many cases they’ve ceased to operate entirely and volunteers have quit. There’s a need to help these important sport programs for the benefit of youth to get back on their feet.”

Orr says the $4 million available through the grants will be delivered in partnership with KidSport Alberta and the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association.
