Regional Energy Committee – Alberta Community Partnership Grant
Council approved a motion to support the County of Northern Lights in applying for the Alberta Community Partnership grant under the inter-municipal collaboration stream. This funding will be used for initiatives carried out by the Regional Energy Committee, which includes the Town of Grimshaw as a partner, along with the MD of Peace 135, the Town of Peace River, Northern Sunrise County, and the County of Northern Lights, which serves as the managing partner. The committee aims to promote and support energy development in the region.
Extended Warranty for Grader
Council authorized the purchase of an extended warranty for the 2018 Cat 160 M3 Grader at a cost of $45,110.00, to be funded by reserves in the transportation budget. This warranty extension provides security against potential major repairs in the future.
Remembrance Day Ceremony at Grimshaw Public School
Council reviewed an invitation from Grimshaw Public School to attend their Remembrance Day Ceremony and deliver greetings on behalf of the Town of Grimshaw on Friday, November 8, 2024. Councillor Carmen Johnson has been authorized to attend the ceremony and share greetings from Council.
Mackenzie Municipal Services Agency Update
Council agreed to a five-year contract with the Mackenzie Municipal Services Agency (MMSA), maintaining current service rates. During the meeting, MMSA Board Chair Sandra Eastman provided an update and introduced Kam Vos, a new Planner and Architect for MMSA. The agency offers support to municipalities in planning, economic development, and community engagement.
Lac Cardinal Regional Economic Development Board Update
Misty Velichka, Economic Development Officer for the Lac Cardinal Regional Economic Development Board (LCREDB), provided Council with an update on LCREDB’s work. She highlighted the board’s enhanced social media engagement, their upcoming website launch and played a promotional video that was created to showcase the region. Membership on the LCREDB board includes representatives from Grimshaw, Berwyn, and the MD of Peace.
Grimshaw and District Chamber of Commerce Update
Chance Gerk and Misty Velichka provided an update on the Grimshaw and District Chamber of Commerce and Harvest Moon Festival. They highlighted the upcoming business awards, scheduled for November 23rd and requested that two councillors or staff members assist with judging and presenting an award at the event. Several Council members plan to attend the business awards, and Council approved sending two representatives as per the Chamber’s request. They also announced a hiring fair planned for the spring and continued efforts to support local businesses through professional development and promotion. Council commended the Chamber and the Harvest Moon Festival Committee, along with the volunteers, sponsors, and Public Works, for their efforts in making the festival a success. This year marked the fourth year of the event, which attracted 2,500 attendees during the day for activities such as the car show, open-air market, kids fun zone, bouncy castles, food vendors, live music, a corn-eating contest, and an inflatable costume race. The evening ticketed event, featuring beer gardens and live music, sold out by the morning of the festival, with 1,000 tickets sold.
Road Closure Bylaw 1210
Council approved the second and third readings of Bylaw 1210, which closes a portion of a lane located between Plan 222140 Block 2 Lot 5 and Plan 6734KS Block 21 Lot J.
Procedure and Committees Bylaw No. 1213
Council passed the first, second, and third readings of Bylaw No. 1213, titled the Procedure and Committees Bylaw. This bylaw outlines the procedures for Council meetings and the conduct of Council members.
Peace River Art Club Gala
Council received an invitation from the Peace River Art Club for their second annual Art Gala on Friday, October 18, 2024. Councillor Carmen Johnson has been authorized to attend the event on behalf of the Town of Grimshaw, and the Council expressed gratitude to the Peace River Art Club for the invitation.
Alberta Pond Hockey Request
The Alberta Pond Hockey Association is seeking volunteer board members for a one-year term on their committee. Council voted to include the creation of this position in their organizational meeting, where Councillors are designated to various boards and committees.
