RCMP Update from Sergeant Dave Brown
Sergeant Dave Brown provided Council with information and updates regarding the Grimshaw community, RCMP initiatives, and regional crime statistics. He shared that specific RCMP priorities for Grimshaw are drug enforcement, theft, and property crime, along with an increased RCMP presence in the community. Additionally, he provided information regarding a successful warrant execution that led to the recovery of stolen property and resulted in charges being laid. Sergeant Brown also discussed collaboration with the Mental Health Taskforce to address social issues in the region and the increased RCMP presence in Grimshaw. He expressed his appreciation for the high attendance at the Crime Watch Community Meeting in April and highlighted the opportunity for the RCMP to connect with and hear from the community. Council reciprocated their gratitude for the RCMP members’ attendance at the Crime Watch meeting and for their increased presence which leads to an increased sense of empowerment and safety in the community.
Emergency Text Messaging Subscription
Council approved that administration proceed with a subscription to Voyent Alert, a text messaging service for the Town of Grimshaw to communicate with residents. The service allows residents, businesses or visitors to receive messages through an app, text message, voice call or email for critical events and residents can also choose to opt in or out of day-to-day communications such as community events, recycling and garbage reminders, community events, fire restriction and fire ban, and repairs to roads and infrastructure.
Off-leash Dog Park
Council approved Phase One of a proposal from Community Services for the creation of an off-leash dog park at Forbes Park (by the Mighty Peace Vet Clinic) in Grimshaw. The project includes fence repairs, installation of dog waste bag receptacles, garbage cans, and signage.
Animals No Longer Permitted at Kinsmen Park
Council directed administration to place “No Animals/Pets Allowed” signs at Kinsmen Park and relocate the dog receptacles to the green space located to the west of the park. This decision comes in response to the substantial accumulation of dog waste at the park, despite the presence of dog waste bag receptacles on-site. Kinsmen Park serves as a popular gathering spot for children and families, necessitating a clean and safe environment for both residents and visitors. Council expressed gratitude to Public Works staff for removing the waste from the park with a bobcat prior to the start of the Grimshaw/Berwyn Soccer Program earlier this week.
Public Works Week
Council declared May 19-25, 2024, National Public Works Week. Public Works professionals play a pivotal role in our community by maintaining essential infrastructure and services. Council members and staff will attend a Community Barbecue on May 21, 2024, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Town of Grimshaw Administration Office parking lot in recognition of Public Works Week, Alberta Crime Prevention Week, and Municipal Government Day. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.
Tax Recovery Property
Council approved an offer to purchase for a tax recovery property located at 4905-53 Street for $25,000.00.
Interring Cremains request
Council approved a request to have the cremains of a mother buried in the same plot as her infant child’s cremains. Council discussed the need to review and update the Cemetery Bylaw for clarification on this type of request.
Street Closure for Harvest Moon Festival
Council approved the closure of Main Street Grimshaw and several joining intersections for the Harvest Moon Festival on September 14, 2024, at 7 am to start set-up for the event.
