The Town of Fairview’s Council meeting on February 1, 2022 had many interesting items on their agenda to discuss.
Notable items included a Regional Governance Study done in 2020 jointly with the MD of Fairview, a proposal for a new residential subdivision behind the Dunvegan Inn and Motor Suites for seniors housing and bringing electric vehicle chargers to the town at no cost to the municipality.
Mayor of Fairview, Gord McLeod said the Regional Governance Study was in the agenda because when the study was conducted; both the Town and MD councils were coming up on election and had the possibility of changing. “We’re bringing it back to see potentially if we want to take the next step and see, where and how we could expand and make potential recommendations from the study on how to work more closely together.” said McLeod.
A proposal for a new seniors housing subdivision was brought up to Council, which was approved, but is in the very earl stages of developing. McLeod noted “One of the issues is with Alberta Transportation; we have to meet all their criteria and stuff like that so there still has to be a lot more discussion.” McLeod also said the developer has yet to come up with anything other than the idea until it gets fully approved by the appropriate sources.
Electric vehicle charging has become a big topic for municipalities in and around the Peace region. New grant programs to install chargers at little to no costs to towns have been kick-started by the provincial and federal governments in recent weeks. “We are going to put in an expression of interest to get a little bit more detail, which is the first step in the process.” said McLeod. “Maybe get in first, before you have to do it later on, especially when there’s a whole bunch of funding for it.” McLeod speaking about installing EV chargers in Fairview. The Mayor said the council needs more information before submitting and application for the funding as there are many unknowns with costs afterwards and what type of charger would potentially be installed
Fairview Town Council’s next meeting is on February 15, 2022.
