A stretch of highway in Mackenzie County could be in for a major upgrade.

Alberta Transportation is moving forward with an engineering study that would help with future upgrades to Highway 58 out to John D’or Prairie, Fox Lake and Garden River.  It would start at the junction of Highway 88 (to Fort Vermilion) and end at the Boundary of Wood Buffalo National Park.

The engineering study, expected to start this September, will focus on the first 59 kilometres of the highway, and will include upgrades, bridge replacements, and paving.

The current gravel highway is dubbed as being in poor condition, and is the only access road to those communities in that area.

The project isn’t in the current budget, but will be submitted for 2022 consideration.
Right now the early estimates are showing that the project could cost around $65 million.

If approved, the highway upgrade could begin in 2023 with completion in 2025.
