Homicide charges laid for incident on Little Red River Cree Nation

At approximately 1 a.m., on October 23, 2021, a vehicle with three occupants were driving on Highway 58 near Highway 88, located on the Little Red River Cree Nation. They were returning to John D’or Prairie community which is part of the Little Red River Cree Nation, from a hunting trip.

During the drive, the male driver and adult female passenger engaged in a verbal argument. The vehicle pulled over, at which point the driver and passenger exited the vehicle and continued to argue.

The driver then retrieved his rifle. The second passenger, an adult male, exited the vehicle also with a rifle.  An interaction occurred between the driver and the male passenger. The driver discharged his firearm, striking and injuring the male passenger. The driver then returned to the vehicle and fled the scene.

At approximately 12:30 p.m., the driver was located in the vehicle which had entered the ditch off of Highway 58, not far from the scene, and was taken into custody.

The male passenger, identified as 28-year-old Keith St. Arnault from the John D’or Prairie community, was transported by EMS to Fort Vermilion, however he was pronounced deceased prior to arriving at the hospital.

The adult female passenger was not physically injured during the incident.

32-year-old Nathan Uhersky from the John D’or Prairie community has been charged with second degree murder in relation to the incident.

After a judicial hearing, Uhersky was remanded to custody, and will next be appearing in Fort Vermilion Provincial Court on November 2, 2021.

As these matters are before the courts, no further details will be provided.
