Alberta Environment and Parks says there is a chance there could be an ice jam in the Lower Peace River.

The province issued an ice jam watch on Tuesday afternoon for the Peace River from Sunny Valley to Fort Vermilion.

The bulletin says the ice front is 76 kilometres downstream from the Town of Peace River.

Water levels have risen two metres at Sunny Valley since Sunday and an ice run from the Smoky River is expected to be jammed upstream.

According to the province, during a dynamic breakup, increasing water levels will lift the intact ice on the river, which is expected to create ice runs and jams.

Alberta Environment monitors the rivers and says a dynamic breakup of the Peace River could travel from Sunny Valley to Fort Vermilion in as few as 48 hours.

Mackenzie County says it is impossible to know with any guarantees if there will be flooding.
