
On February 7th, at around 2 p.m., Grande Prairie RCMP officers were called to assist Emergency Medical Services attending a scene of a man who had consumed drugs and was creating a disturbance at a residence in the city.
EMS and RCMP entered the residence and located a 26-year-old man, where he was arrested and then transported to the Grande Prairie RCMP detachment where he was lodged in cells. Records show while the man was in custody, he was checked by both guards and police officers.
The next morning at about 7:50 a.m., an officer entered the cell to wake the man up and was unresponsive and not breathing. EMS was immediately dispatched and conducted emergency measures until he was pronounced dead.
ASIRT has been conducted to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death and will examine the conduct of police during this incident, including the circumstances surrounding the man’s arrest and his time in custody.
Investigation is still underway and no further information is available at this time.
