Several communities in our region will soon be getting high-speed internet access as part of the province’s Rural Broadband Strategy.

Minister of Technology and Innovation, Nate Glubish, says this will be a “huge game changer” for these communities.

“Our goal with all of this is to reach universal connectivity. Ensuring that every single Albertan, regardless of where they live, will have access to reliable high-speed internet. Where we find ourselves today is with the most recent announcement, the province and the federal government together are announcing a little over $90 million worth of projects that have been funded in about 40 communities and about 10,000 households.”

Some of the communities included in the announcement are Rainbow Lake, Sunset House, Salt Prairie, Enilda, Joussard, and Kinuso

Glubish says one of their priorities is on indigenous communities.

“The fact is when you look across Alberta at who are the most impacted by lack of connectivity, it’s indigenous communities. A lot of those indigenous communities are in some of the most remote corners of the province. As we work to closing that gap, naturally you’re going to see a lot of indigenous communities who will be a part of these announcements.”

Glubish says there’s over $780 million in funding from both the provincial and federal governments to this project which will see more communities announced in the near future.
