Last night a local veteran has flown to Ottawa to attend the National Remembrance Day Ceremony.
Canadian veteran and the Peace River School Division’s Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Adam Murray was selected to attend the ceremony by the Canadian Ranger Patrol Group. Murray says he’s the only Canadian Ranger from Alberta heading to the ceremony.
“I’ll remember some of my collegues, and it’ll be really special for me to be there and take part in it.”
Murray notes he’s looking forward to be heading off to Ottawa, but he says it won’t be his first time attending the service.
“A lot of people don’t know this, but I was born in Ottawa. When I was young, I went to the service many, many, many times,” says Murray. “I look up to veterans with great respect. I always really appreciate learning about Canada and Canadian history through the services, and now I’ll be a part of it. It’s a very special feeling for me.”
Murray went overseas to Afghanistan in 2010 and says it’s an experience he’s grateful for. He explains one of the the most memorable things about being overseas was one of his last missions where he got to walk around a school that was liberated from the Taliban.
“The school was built by Canadian engineers a number of years before in a little town called Zangabad. One of my last missions overseas was to make sure that town was safe again and that school was free from the Taliban. They used it as a headquarters when they held that town and it was nice to make sure that it was going to be used for the right purposes again,” says Murray. “A lot of young and amazing troops made that happen and I was just lucky enough to be there with them. It’ll be a fond memory for me as I continue to work here in the Peace River School Division with the students in this area.”
Murray adds he isn’t sure yet what his exact role will be at the service, but he’s honoured and excited to be taking part.
