The province is looking get more outdoor enthusiasts coming to Alberta.

Todd Loewen, the Minister of Forestry and Parks, says attracting these kinds of tourists can bring some local benefits.

“We do have outfitters all across the Peace Country and of course people who want to hunt the species that we have in the Peace Country, they’ll be coming here. There’s great opportunity there, but the general tourists when they learn about the diversity of the province itself as far as the landscapes, they like the idea that one day they can be in the Rocky Mountains, next day in the Prairies and the next day in the boreal forest. We just have that kind of diversity here.”

Loewen has been travelling to numerous events in the US and Europe in recent months as part of this promotion effort.

He’s also been involved with the auctioning of special hunting licenses with the money going to support conservation initiatives.

“Different organizations, maybe universities or biologists doing studies, they’ll make applications to these committees and these committees will review the applications and decide which ones they want to support with funding. These projects, they include habitat projects, mule deer culling studies, prescribed burn projects, all different projects that can benefit wildlife.”

Last year, the Minister’s Special License program raised more than $1.2 million, supporting conservation projects in Alberta.
