The La Crete Lumber Barons will be looking to defend their NWJHL championship.
The team will have a new number one goaltender after the departure of Andre Giesbrecht, but Barons GM Dennis Paul says they have faith in their goaltending tandem.
“We’ve got a local fella coming out of U18, Ty Peters, who looked really good in camp and he earned himself a spot as well as returning goalie Trace Lizotte who really battled hard at camp. We’re going with two younger goaltenders and we’re just going to try to develop them as we go into the season and make sure we have the best team in front of them as well.”
Paul says they’ll have another young team with some rookies expected to make an impact.
We’ve got Cole Penner and Rydley Gerbrandt, a forward and a defenceman. There’s some skill set coming up on the young side of our team, they’re going to help the back end and the front end. We feel Cole will have some impact right off the bat. We have a couple more U18 kids that have come up that have impressed and we’re hanging onto them as well.”
A couple of returning players to the Lumber Barons include Drew Friesen who lead the league with 77 points and Eric Giesbrecht who scored a league leading 46 goals.
The Lumber Barons will begin their season on Saturday when they’ll have their home opener against Sexsmith.
