Unsightly Premises Bylaw
Council approved the first reading of the Unsightly Premises Bylaw, which allows the Chief Administrative Officer to initiate enforcement proceedings without a formal complaint with three signatures, as the previous bylaw required. The bylaw regulates and allows for the control and reduction of unsightly premises within the MD of Peace.
NADC Engagement Session
MD of Peace Reeve Robert Willing virtually attended the June 19, 2024, Northern Alberta Development Council Stakeholder Outreach session. The session aimed to gather feedback from participants on the challenges and opportunities of economic development in Northern Alberta.
Rural Municipalities Association District 4 Meeting
Council reviewed the agenda for the Rural Municipalities Association District 4 meeting on August 9, 2024, in La Crete. Council discussed the MD’s current challenges and decided they did not have anything to add to the agenda. Reeve Robert Willing, Deputy Reeve Sandra Eastman, Councillors Theresa Johnson and Lori Kinnee, and CAO Margaret McClarty will attend the meeting.
FireSmart Awareness Event
Thanks to the generosity of TC Energy, the MD of Peace will host a FireSmart Awareness information event and barbecue at the Village of Berwyn Mainstreet Celebration on August 24, 2024. TC Energy provided $2,840 in grant funding to support a FireSmart community awareness event. Firefighters will be in attendance to answer questions and hand out FireSmart giveaway items, and staff from the Grimshaw Co-op will assist with the barbecue.
Amendment to Fire Policy
Council approved an amendment to Fire Policy 1 stating that fire apparatus can only be used to flood MD skating or curling rinks if one or more of the firefighters are willing to assist and that under no circumstances will fire apparatus be loaned out.
Subdivision Application
Council approved a subdivision application request for NE 19-83-23 W5.
Community Sale at Lac Cardinal Hall
Council requested that Administration gauge the general interest via social media in a “Community Sale Event” at Lac Cardinal Hall (located on MD property). Tables would be sold for $10 to those wishing to sell second-hand items and for home-based and small businesses to sell their products. Council also stipulated that MD staff would be required to volunteer their time to manage the event.
Policy Review – Portable Corrals Policy ADM-2
Council approved an amendment to the Portable Corrals Policy regarding usage.
Assessment and Taxation Information Policy ADM-3
Council approved a minor amendment to the policy that clarifies a Freedom of Information Protection (FOIP) regulation.
Insurance for Community Organizations ADM-4
Council approved amendments to the policy to reflect the process required to add groups to the policy as additionally named insured under the MD insurance policy.
Municipal Owned Lands – Public Use ADM5
Council approved the retirement of the policy that previously allowed public access to the Berwyn, Brownvale, and Grimshaw gravel pits for berry picking and hiking. This decision was made for safety and liability reasons, and as a result, public use of these gravel pits is now prohibited.
