MD of Peace Council Highlights

Here’s the highlights from the MD of Peace 135 Council meeting held earlier this week:

Meeting with Dan Williams, MLA and Minister of Mental Health and Addictions

Council authorized that all councillors attend the July 19, 2024 meeting with Dan Williams, MLA and Minister of Mental Health and Addictions. Agenda topics include the Shaftesbury Fire funding, the Peace River Airport, and advocating for mental health and addiction services and support in the region.

Unsightly Premises Bylaw

Council approved the Unsightly Premises Bylaw, which allows the Chief Administrative Officer to initiate enforcement proceedings without a formal complaint with three signatures, as the previous bylaw required. The bylaw regulates and allows for the control and reduction of unsightly premises within the MD of Peace.

Fundraising Opportunities

Council directed administration to explore philanthropic services and various means and avenues to assist the MD in fundraising and sponsorship opportunities for the FGire Line Light Attack Wildland Apparatus, and other large capital projects.

Regional Municipalities Meeting

Council reviewed correspondence from Northern Sunrise County requesting a regional meeting to discuss items of interest. The meeting will include several local municipalities from the region. Council directed administration to confirm Council’s attendance.

Public Works Update
Barry Denison, Public Works Foreman provided Council with an update on work around the MD including dust control, road maintenance, park maintenance, signage, and beaver dam issues. Council reviewed the Ratepayer Request report that provides information on various requests to the MD and outlines the response and progress on various requests. Council also made a motion to transition a portion of Range Road 231 (by the Mighty Peace Golf Course) to gravel in the spring of 2025.

Agriculture Services Board Update
Agriculture Services Manager Nassar Iqbal shared that two summer students have been hired to help with weed inspection, he provided an update on the shelterbelt program, and discussions were had regarding the rental of Stampede Grounds.
