The Alberta government is investing more than $211.3 million over three years to improve and expand recreation in and access to provincial parks.

Foresty, Parks and Tourism Minister Todd Loewen says Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park will be getting new and expanded campgrounds as part of this.

“There’s going to be a wide range of activities happening in the North and in the Peace country in particular. We’re in the process of identifying more and more all the time and planning on what we’re doing at each of those locations. There’s definitely a large share of the money coming to the North. Of course being from the north myself, I always want to make sure that the money is distributed across the province and I think we’ve done a good job here.”

Loewen says $18.3 million will be spent in 2023 on improving parks in the North.

He says this will help deal with an increase in visitors to the parks that have happened in recent years.

“We’ve seen a huge increase in outdoor activities during the pandemic when people couldn’t travel or do the things that they may have done normally, but I think there’s actually been a fair amount of retention to that because I think once people have realized what they can do in the outdoors right here in our great province, they’ve realized that they like that and they’re continuing doing that. Overall I think Albertans are taking this opportunity to continue their enjoyment of the great outdoors.”
