Monitoring Grizzlies In The Peace

There’s an event coming up in Manning next week where you can find out more about grizzly bears in the Peace Region.

It’s being put on by the NAIT Centre for Boreal Research.

Rielle Massey-Leclerc, the centre’s Research Extension and Education coordinator, says it will be focused on monitoring their populations.

“Certainly living up in Northern communities, we see them a little bit more than other folks in the city would. It’s an interesting topic and certainly a current one now that we’re in the colder weather and they’re trying to get what they can before they go to sleep.”

Massey-Leclerc adds that it’s part of a project they’ve been doing for a few years where they use DNA to monitor their populations.

“A big part of that project is using members of the public who are out and about anyways in the environment. When they happen upon grizzly scat, they can collect it and sent it to Alberta Environment and Parks to help them identify different individuals.”

The event takes place at the Paul Rowe School in Manning on November 6.
