Most students will be returning to in person schooling next Tuesday.

In a joint press conference held by Minister of Education Adriana LaGrange & Chief Medical Officer Dr. Deena Hinshaw, they announced that the majority of K-12 schools will return after the long weekend. The exception is Wood Buffalo (Fort Mac), which will wait until May 31st.

“I’m confident that we can all work together to keep cases falling in young Albertans”, said Hinshaw. “We have seen a sharp decline in cases in school age children in Alberta in recent weeks”

They’ve been watching the numbers closely in school aged children to ensure that spread wouldn’t be a major concern.
Hinshaw pointed out that the numbers support that transmission patterns in schools are directly in correlation with what is happening out in the community.

Recreation activities for kids will remain closed.

The province’s daily COVID-19 update:

-2.27 million doses of vaccines administered

-50.5% of the population that is 12 and older have now been vaccinated

-908 new cases in the last 24 hours

-685 in hospital being treated for COVID-19. 185 in ICU

-6 new deaths in the last 24 hours

Dr. Hinshaw once again implored people to get vaccinated and to follow all public measures.
“Be wise, stay safe, and get immunized as soon as possible”
