Movie Monday Mentions: Barbie

July 24, 2023 Blog, Jared

After months of shiny pink marketing and wild story after story about this movie, it has finally been released but is it worth checking out? In my opinion. YES!

We follow Barbie as she is living her ideal life in Barbie Land. Until one day she starts getting thoughts of death and her feet are no longer in a perpetual state of tiptoe. Because of these problems, she is tasked with going into the real world to set things right. She has to find the girl that played with her and see what happened.

Already, the plot sets itself up for some fun moments. If you are expecting JUST a campy tale about Barbie dolls, this movie has that, but a lot more. There are a lot of good messages in this movie, especially for women, but I feel like everyone can gain something by watching this movie. The characters go through a lot and end up coming out if it changed for the better and surprisingly learn about the human condition.

In the movie, we get to see a lot of different Barbies and Kens and even an Allan. A lot of Mattles history is on display here. Even some of their… let’s call them mistakes. It is really cool to see that a company can admit that they messed up and talk about it. Instead of doing what a lot of other companies do, which is the exact opposite of that.

That’s not to say that this movie isn’t as advertised. Everything you see in the trailer is here, and more. There are so many funny moments and good jokes. The fact that they live in Barbie Land and ARE dolls leads to some great physical comedy. In one scene barbie has breakfast with milk and it is empty just like a toy would be. The movie is well written and although it does have a clear message it has fun while doing it.

Of course, I do have to mention the soundtrack. There were so many great songs. Leading up to the release of the movie, singles from the album have been released and we have even played them here at the station. Throughout the movie, the lyrics of the songs actually hold a lot of meaning. At one point a singer stops singing to comment on what’s happening mid-song, which is super fun.

Below is the trailer which I would definitely give watch if you want to see more of the movie. It shows off some fun moments and just how goofy this movie can get. once again I would highly recommend giving this movie a watch no matter who you are.
