An interesting premise for a modern thriller. It accomplishes what it sets out to do but is it good?
Drop follows the widow Violet who is getting back into the dating world after getting out of a relationship of abuse. Her son is left at home being watched by her sister while she meets a man named Henry who she has been talking to for a few months. They meet at a fancy restaurant when things start to get weird. She starts getting drops of memes threatening her to do things and eventually telling her to kill her date. Violet has to figure out who is sending them and why before something happens to her son?
Watching the trailers I thought it was a neat idea. What I didn’t realize was how awkward the first half of the movie was going to be. I mean it was expected. They are on a first date. So, As well as dealing with icebreaker questions Violet is also trying to solve the mystery of who is trying to make her kill her date. They do use the idea of memes as a threat to their advantage with the images being untraceable. This just makes the mystery even harder to solve.
The second half of the movie ties everything together. With her finally solving the mystery and confronting the villain. It felt good to finally know and I thought the reveal was well done and not cheap. The motive was definitely not what I was expecting but it made sense after watching everything.
Overall I thought it was an interesting idea and a fine movie. Nothing really hooked me and made me stick with these characters. There were a few things that seemed off such as the air pressure being super strong near the windows. I will say though that the waiter was amazing!
