Hiding Ain’t Living, a phrase that gets Marvin Gable to finally think about what makes him truly happy. It also kickstarts our laugh-filled action-packed romp.
Love Hurts follows Marvin Gabe a realtor who has a dark past. He used to be the right-hand man of his brother, Knuckles, an underground crime boss. A couple years ago he sparred the life of a woman he loved even though he was supposed to kill her and left for a better life. Which is where our movie picks up. The problem is his past decisions have now caught up with him.
Marvin is played by Ke Huy Quan and it is great to see him in more roles after he returned to the big screen in a big way with Everything Everywhere All at Once.
I thought this movie was really well done. A lot of the comedy hit for me. It was hilarious watching Marvin balance his life of being a realtor and also a trained fighter. The constant back and forth really highlighted his internal struggle of trying to make up his mind about whether he should leave his new or old life behind.
We also get introduced to a colourful cast of characters over the course of the movie. One hitman sent to murder Marvin uses knives and is a poet. He actually finds love during the movie. A duo that fights with guns are constantly having back-and-forths while trying to take down Marvin and one of them is trying to mend a relationship with his wife throughout the movie. Finally, Marvin fights with his fists and reconnects with a lost love. We get a great showcase of multiple relationships at different stages in the film. It really shows that love comes in all forms.
With each assassin fighting with different weapons it is fun when they meet up and see how each of their fighting styles play off of one another. I also can’t forget to mention that Marvin’s brother at multiple points fights with a bubble tea straw and it is the absolute best. I also can’t forget that a property brother was in the film, Drew Scott, he played Marvin’s rival realtor. His character also happens to be a trained black belt.
Overall I really enjoyed this movie. Looking online afterward it did not receive good reviews and flopped its opening weekend at the box office. Despite that, I think this will be one to remember and might become a yearly Valentine’s Day movie for me. If you are still curious and want to see more check out the trailer below.
