The 8th film in the action-filled franchise…and my first!
Look, I know it’s not ideal, you should in fact watch the other 7 films to get the most out of The Final Reckoning. Despite that I still enjoyed it.
This movie is the culmination of the last 30 years of Tom Cruise going on stunt-filled adventures and even if you’re not caught up on everything I feel like they do a good job of catching the audience up. Of course, there are still major things I’m missing but we do still get a clear picture of what his goal is in this film. He’s trying to stop the Entity by any means necessary, whether that means going underwater to deep depths or fist-fighting pilots in the sky.
The movie starts with Tom Cruise thanking the audience for coming out to the theatre and enjoying the film the way it was made to be watched which I thought was sweet because in a world of streaming it is nice that people still appreciate the cinematic experience.
Then we get a lot of flashbacks, a bit of a story dump, and about half an hour in the title sequence plays. Which blew my mind just a little bit. Although that might sound like a lot and maybe even a bit boring I assure you it’s worth it.
The movie likes to do this thing where multiple times characters talk about how this task is impossible and no one will be able to do it…and then they do it. This may seem predictable but I kinda loved it. I mean the story isn’t the deepest thing I’ve ever seen but that doesn’t matter. The set pieces great stunts and edge-of-your-seat anticipation were enough that this almost 3-hour film just flew by.
I enjoyed it so much that it made me curious about the rest of the franchise and the other adventures I missed out on. So, after I went and saw it I went down to the store and was able to find the 6 movie collection.
