The new Pokémon video game came out this weekend and I have been playing it non-stop. If you have not played any before or if you have been skeptical about this one stay with me here because this one is wild.
The full title is Pokémon Legends Arceus and it takes place in the distant past. your goal is to catch a lot of Pokémon. Which if you are familiar with Pokémon at all, that is the whole shtick “gotta catch em all”.
There is a lot that they changed with this one compared to previous entries, for instance, you would usually follow a linear path through the game and beat 8 gym leaders on your way to become the very best Pokémon trainer. This title diverges from that old formula where instead of having to beat 8 gym leaders, you just follow a more open narrative where you have to save the land from giant frenzied Pokémon.
You literally get dropped out of the sky and start your adventure in this new world as a part of a research team helping all the creatures and people of this strange land.
As you progress there is more and more things to unlock that make adventuring easier such as ridable Pokémon and better gadgets that you can craft and use.
The constant loop of going out doing some quests catching and researching new Pokémon and that doing it all again is so addicting. Putting into words how interesting this game is turned out to be is fairly difficulty because if you grew up with Pokémon or even if you got into it recently the whole idea is getting to live in a world with these fantastical creatures, battling them and well… catching them all, is everything that a lot of people wanted. The fact that this gets close to this fantasy is super cool. albeit the game is not without its flaws.
The areas could have more in them, the graphics could look better and there could always be more stuff to do…but, for what it is it is super good.
