In Fairviews Town Council meeting on October 5, 2021, the Deer and Wildlife Feeding and Attractants Bylaw was read for the third time and passed to become a new bylaw.
It is now a punishable offence to intentionally feed deer and other wildlife within the municipality; by leaving or placing things out for the sole purpose of attracting and feeding them.
Mayor of Fairview, Gord MacLeod says depending on who you talk to in town, there’s an issue with intentionally feeding the deer. “Some people like the deer in the community and there’s lots that don’t like it because they damage their vegetation and households and potential confrontations with deer with the public on the streets and sidewalks.”
MacLeod says council consulted with Fish and Wildlife to draft the bylaw and while it won’t completely fix the issue council hopes it will help.
The bylaw discloses bird feeders are not included and people will not be fined for intentionally attracting and feeding birds with them.
