New online tool to streamline affordable housing search in the province

People in the Province of Alberta are now able to access the Find Housing tool online which is geared towards making affordable housing easier to find and apply for.

The tool guides potential applicants through the process of evaluating their eligibility, and connects them with providers and housing options for their individual situations.

Current tenants, housing operators, and social service agencies had their input in the creation of this tool and how it should be offered to users. The tool can also be used by family members, nonprofit organizations, and social service agencies to help others access housing information and affordable housing solutions.

“Searching and applying for housing support can be a difficult task, which is why Alberta’s government made it a priority to streamline this process.” Said Josephine Pon, Minister of Seniors and Housing, during the announcement of the program, “Thanks to input from tenants living in affordable housing and the agency staff who support them, the new Find Housing online tool is an easy, effective way for Albertans to access the housing they need.”

Today, more than 110,000 Albertans (nearly 2.5 per cent) live in more than 57,000 government-subsidized housing units. While that number may seem high, 24,000 eligible households are on waitlists for affordable housing programs, a number that has doubled in a decade.

Lori Sigurdson, NDP critic for Housing, responded to the launch of the tool by saying “This new tool does nothing to help the 24,000 Albertans waiting for affordable housing. Instead, Albertans will simply find out there is still no housing available for them and they will continue to sit on a waitlist. The UCP has managed to revive a program that they cut upon coming into office and made it worse by adding more steps and layers of complexity to find housing. If the UCP stopped attacking low income Albertans with budget cuts and claw backs, we could address the root of the problem by investing in more affordable housing stock and getting Alberta families into a home.”
